PYOOP is inspired by low-fire porcelain painting, overglazing, china painting, on-glazing, and Paint Your Own Pottery.
PYOOP is similar to a visual artist painting on a bought, pre-made, blank canvas. Sometimes the canvas is not even blank, but it's an old one from the back of the studio. They haven't made the canvas themselves. Are they less of an artist for painting on something someone else has made? Or is an artist who makes the canvas or the mug, AND paints the canvas/mug, more of an artist than someone who doesn't?
What do you think?
I think the comparison and competition is unnecessary. If it is important for you as an artist to make the canvas or the mug then do it. But also recognise that people are different and this may not be important to someone else... In the field of ceramics there seems to be an old hierarchy where handbuilt terracotta clay, low-fired in oxidation, is for humble beginners and wheel thrown porcelain clay, high-fired in reduction, is for serious artists. And the popular Paint Your Own Pottery doesn't even enter the equation. But I've also noticed a growing spirit of collaboration, over competition, inclusion over exclusion. So maybe things are changing?
